CELEBRATING FAITHFULNESS AND THANKSGIVING
Celebrating 200
Years of College General in Penang

I:
COLLEGE GENERAL IN HER
BICENTENNIAL SPLENDOUR
College General Major Seminary rejoiced as she
welcomed back her sons – the alumni – all her
past students - for her bicentennial celebration
which culminated with the Eucharistic
Celebration on 2nd October and continued with a
dinner on the evening of the same day. Although
the College of Martyrs was founded in 1665, she
had a rich history of preregrinations before
finally setting foot in Penang in 1808. Here,
she has remained for two hundred years.
Invitations were sent out as far as Thailand,
Myanmar, Singapore, Brunei, Vietnam and
Cambodia. The celebration was aptly themed
“Celebrating Faithfulness and Thanksgiving” for
it summed up the spirit of College General.
Heeding their alma mater, many returned from
near and far. There were Archbishops, Bishops
and Emeriti, priests - retired, serving and
past, seminarians and ex-seminarians alike.
College General also played host to the
seminarians and College Fathers from St. Francis
Xavier Major Seminary, Singapore, and also
Rector and seminarians from the CDD Minor
Seminary, Pulau Gadong, Melaka, and Rector and
staff from St Peter’s College, Kuching.
Many arrived a day before, and the seminary was
abuzz with excitement. Three blocks of
residences swelled to life, so much so, that
accommodation had to be provided from the
surrounding locales. It was delightful to see
many of the earlier alumni joking, chiding,
arguing and even cajoling each other some even
in Latin! The others were content to sit and
regale each other with ageless stories of their
time, still fresh and vivid. Peals of laughter
could be heard as some of them took walks to
survey its grounds, visit the Chapel, the
Museum, the Art Gallery, while some preferred to
quietly reminisce over a cup of coffee while
others sought meditation before the Blessed
Sacrament like it was yesterday.

The present
community which consisted of eight seminarians
and three College Fathers with the rest of the
staff of College General sought the help of the
laity in regard the multifarious and multilevel
preparations. In the true nature of
collaborative ministry and selfless giving, the
laity responded generously and rallied to the
support of the seminary.
Meetings were held months in advance to plan and
sort out the many issues such as logistics,
liturgy, security, publications, souvenirs,
protocol, accommodation, food and beverage,
flower arrangements, lighting, sound, music,
choir, etc. Much support and encouragement were
given from the parishioners from neighbouring
churches like the Church of the Immaculate
Conception, Pulau Tikus, Cathedral of the Holy
Spirit, Church of St Anne, Bukit Mertajam, etc,
which helped to make their stay a most memorable
one. Assistance was also received from a busload
of parishioners from St. Thomas, Kuantan, who
dropped in to clean the rooms in the blocks, and
also the museum and its priceless artifacts.

The Eucharistic Celebration was the
highlight of the celebration and was
held in the Great Hall, which was by now
decked out in banners, drapes &
spectacular floral arrangements. Many
people came from near and far to witness
this grand occasion. The Hall was packed
as many jostled for a seat or stood and
craned their necks for a glimpse of the
spectacular train of priests and bishops
who were about to process in. Lyrics for
a theme song was also specially composed
for the occasion and taught to the
congregation prior to the celebration.

“Its so nice, so good –
to see old friends, old
memories. I appreciate
very especially the
theme. Be Faithful to
the Lord and give thanks
to Him. I am glad to
meet all our bishops,
priests and
seminarians.”
Fr. Achilles Htun Whe

“Its a good coming home
feeling, to be back to
the place where we were
formed for six years. So
many happy memories.
Also, to meet again with
so many fellow priests.”
Fr. Patrick Goh,

“Its great to see
friends…yesterday was
the best for us because
we can share with others
and draw more lessons
from the others.”

“I feel convinced that
the church is also a
globalizing church, that
gives us hope and faith,
and which also tests us
in this fast changing
world. College General
strengthens our faith
and hope. And when we
meet friends from other
countries, that really
actualizes our mission
of building our kingdom
of God. College General
is a symbol of that.”
Fr. Niphot Thianwihan
(1968 – 1974)

“Pray
that College General
will function well.”
Archbishop Nicholas Chia

Bishop Antony
Selvanayagam, the president of the seminary
presided along with twelve other Arch/bishops.
Close to two hundred priests concelebrated. The
Responsorial Psalm was composed and sung by two
seminarian cantors. In his homily, Archbishop
John Ha drew from the theme and noted how in
fidelity, College General were one with her
martyrs through time, suffering persecution in
profound faith and total commitment, and keeping
true to the Father’s name, come what may.
The Apostolic Delegate, representative of the
Vatican, His Excellency, Archbishop Salvatore
Penacchio, also read from the speech of Cardinal
Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State to the
Vatican, imparting the Apostolic Blessing from
the Holy Father to the students, their teachers,
families and all those participating in the
celebration. Then came Yang Berhormat Chow Kon
Yow, representative of the state government -
who thanked everyone for their support they had
extended to the new elected representatives in
the recent general elections. Thereafter, Fr.
Edwin Paul, Rector of College General expressed
his gratitude to all the lay people for their
sterling assistance. Everyone burst into
laughter when he remarked that without lay
assistance, the seminarians would have been
exhausted and joined the ranks of the martyrs
themselves. Finally, Bishop Antony Selvanayagam
delighted everyone with heartwarming stories of
the times in College General.
Tribute was also paid to the several MEP Fathers
who returned to celebrate this momentous
occasion with us. Indeed, even those who were in
a wheelchair, like Fr. Andrew Volle, MEP, was
not deterred. They were given thunderous
applause. Leon Gomez (CG 1964 – 1969) summed it
up most appropriately. “I feel it is very, very
enriching – the roots that I belong to, it is a
long heritage. Although the MEP introduced us to
the faith, the Asian side of it, is strongly
blooming. Even though it is a European priest,
the people in Asia are very grateful to the
people who phased themselves out. We accept with
our own calibre, the people of Asia. We are
proud to be part of it.”

Fr. Johnson
Fernandez, Holy Trinity Parish, Singapore
thought that the whole celebration was “well
organized.” He particularly liked the Liturgy,
which he thought was “very, very well done
especially the choice of songs.”
II: JOYFUL
REUNION DINNER OF THE ALUMNI
In the evening, the atmosphere turned distinctly
convivial, as the Great Hall was transformed
into a Banquet Hall with lilting background
music. The grounds themselves were filled with
lights giving everything a most festive
atmosphere. The evening was reserved exclusively
for the alumni. Those who had left the seminary
or clerical state were invited to bring their
families and children along, and some did.
Basically, all were made to feel as part of a
great, big, family and the atmosphere was like
that of a family reunion, full of laughter,
banter and merriment. Fr. Joseph Gapitang, (CG
1974 – 1979) Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier,
Keningau, Keningau Diocese, Sabah put it very
well: “Very enriching, beautiful, bringing back
old memories. I am really happy to meet so many
of our alumni. There is no feeling of
‘strangers.’ All one family.”
Everyone was treated to a sumptuous spread of
Penang fare. The evening also saw the return of
the College Band, “The Hot Sems”, and the crowd
cheered as they played through medley after
medley of songs. Many of the alumni were taken
down memory lane as old pictures of the
seminarians and priests from the old seminary in
Kelawai Road and those in Mariophile were
movingly projected on the wall of the Great
Hall. That evening also saw the grand launch of
a special commemorative issue of Sinaran 2008.
Finally, a great big cake was wheeled out in the
shape of the College Crest, and all Father
Rectors present and past were invited to cut it.
Everyone watched as Archbishop Murphy Pakiam,
Archbishop Emeritus Soter Fernandez, Mgr. James
Ghanapiragasam, Fr Francis Anthony and Fr. Edwin
Paul sauntered over and joined hands for a
marvelously symbolic gesture – one of
solidarity, faith and thanksgiving - everyone
realized that the time honoured tradition of the
seminary was being preserved, and the torch,
being passed.
Time simply flew past, and the days spent
together simply evaporated. Along the page sides
are some of the comments made by the alumni of
their joyful reunion. All said and done,
Archbishop Nicholas Chia of Singapore summed it
up best: “Pray that College General will
function well.”
